About the Institute
The Institute trains highly qualified teachers and chamber artists. The
teachers already have a vast knowledge of methodology and psychology. Their
musical training is versatile. Our graduates are able to join either small
chamber choirs or big choirs and orchestras. They can easily adjust their views
to those of their new conductors or colleagues. They have a wide understanding
of different trends and have a trustworthy taste in music.
They are familiar with instrumental-vocal literature, instrumental and solo
methodology. Their arts pedagogic views and scale of values help them to
preserve our traditions and national values. They permanently improve their
technical and practical knowledge. As teachers they have proved to be very good
and successful. Owing to their knowledge of languages they are able to take
part in international music life.

Departments of the
Institute:
The institute is in charge of organizing the entrance examinations, which test
the applicants' knowledge of solfeggio and music theory through written and
oral tests. The oral test gives the opportunity to evaluate our applicants'
skills in music literature. Those students who want to take up solfeggio and
music theory must also take an exam in folk music. The requirements of the
entrance exam are fixed: they test the knowledge acquired at the secondary
technical school. We inform the students about the types of exams by sending
out prospectuses to music schools.
Solfeggio is taught in four semesters, the
music theory in six and aesthetics in four semesters. At the end of each
course the students have to take a final exam.
In the fourth academic year we start
teaching folk music and close it with an examination.
The music theory comprises the
description of different trends and compositional principles. This subject has
an integrating feature as it sums up harmony. Counterpoint and analysis by
using creatively simple techniques and instruments.
Practising ear training, improving musical
memory and rhythm are of main importance in teaching solfeggio. The music
theory and solfeggio are practical subjects so they are taught in small groups.
The music history lessons are based on versatile authentic materials and
reference books.
At the exam our students are supposed to give short presentations.
We train future solfeggio teachers in the main subject solfeggio and music
theory for four years at a very high level. Their curriculum comprises
solfeggio teaching practice in methodology and choir-leading.
The library provides access to books, orchestra notes and a musical studio,
where apart from listening to audio materials students, can record and listen
to their own performance.
In the future, the Institute of Musical Art
will teach some other theoretical subjects as well when other arts subjects are
introduced.

As well as piano, training in organ,
percussion instruments, guitar and singing are offered with one trainer for
each subject. Our aim is to give the students special and general knowledge in
8 semesters, which enables them to work in their special field. The ability for
individual mental guidance and the need for continuous self-study should be
established. Instrumental music and familiarity with musical compositions
should develop their character, aesthetic sense, personality. Within the
department all the majors with the sole exception of singing entitled to give
university training within the framework of the Music Academy. Since none of the
majors (except for percussion instruments) train for orchestral music, special
attention should be paid to chamber music and singing in the choir. These are
directly built into instrumental studies, singing gives basic help to the sound
formation of piano and organ music.
The department is also responsible for the
teaching of wood winds and brass instruments and the teaching of methodological
subjects and also controls practical training in the music school. The students
learn the history of instruments, the operation of respiratory organs, the
correct posture and mouth shaping and the teaching tasks on basic level. They
also learn the wind parts of compositions, paying special attention to the
problems of unity and intonation. They deal with the problems of teaching
phrasing, shaping, the theory of art, memorisation and the development of
musical creativity.

The department is
responsible for training students in the violin, viola, cello and double bass. After
8 semesters of studies graduate students obtain a music teacher degree . During
their studies they usually join the Gy?r University Orchestra. Apart from their
instrumental music skills, technical progress and musical performance is
regularly assessed at the recitals and end-of-term examinations. Students also
have the possibility to take part in the musical events of the city. Those of
higher academic years have permission to take a part-time job in music schools
and professional orchestras.
At our institute
this Department is responsible for co-ordinating the subjects of music theory,
solfeggio, the history and aesthetics of music and folk music as well as their
methods of requirements and recitation. The solfeggio theory as a main subject
and the additional course for training solfeggio teachers and choir leaders for
primary schools also belong to us, as well as the basic rules of composing,
which is a compulsory course for the students on the organ course. For 4th year
students, special musical seminars are offered as an option. This academic
year, “Haydn’s oeuvre” were offered. In the future new
seminars will be offered, for example, significant mass compositions in the
history of music; Mussorgsky’s oeuvre, and The history of string
quartets.
